How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

A lot of people, including sahms are looking to make money online in their spare time (as if they have any!)so look to affiliate marketing as an option. Affiliate marketing, also known as internet marketing is increasingly popular as a way to make money online.

Stay at home parents, work at home entrepreneurs, and people looking to up their income are looking at monetizing their computers with affiliate marketing. It can be done in your spare time and you can even fire your boss and do it full time if you are really good at it.

How does affiliate marketing work?

Companies pay people sales commission for facilitating a sale for them. That means that you don’t have to physically sell the product but you do have to get people to buy a product through your link. Companies that have affiliate programs will set up a system that allows you to use a specific link to get people to buy from you or there are other ways to capture data about the sale as well. You can work through affiliate programs for individual companies and through affiliate networks.

How do you get affiliate sales?

There are a multitude of options for getting people to buy through your link. You can simply capture the attention of people who are looking for something specific and get them to buy through you and you can also pre-sell someone on that something specific so you create sales for yourself. This can be done any number of ways such as:

  • pay per click advertising
  • writing product reviews
  • niche blogging
  • article marketing
  • e-mail marketing
  • and more

What sorts of products can be sold through affiliate programs?

You name it and you can probably be an affiliate for it. It’s a win-win for the company selling it because they capture more sales and only pay you if there’s an actual sale. You can sell physical retail products and you can sell dowloadable products, and you can sell services such as consulting, memberships, and more. Affiliate marketing opens many doors of possibility once you learn a bit about target audiences, keyword targeting, search engine optimization, social media, and other aspects of online marketing.

How do you get paid?

Affiliate programs work in different ways. Some programs pay you instantly per sale via PayPal. Some programs send you checks when you reach specified payment thresholds. You’ll want to read all the fine print in any program you consider joining and look at what others say about the profitability of that program. Results will vary but looking into the potential of various programs is smart before investing time and / or money in them.

How can you learn to be a successful internet marketer?

You can find many online sources of free entrepreneur information and you can take some shortcuts and get earning sooner if you buy information products that are guaranteed to teach you. (For example, a friend and mentor, Matthew Bredel recently launched a learning program called Tru-Guru that teaches you how to start your own online business and if you join you get a free copy of the book “No Money Marketing” that I co-wrote) There’s a lot to learn but this can be a huge potential opportunity for you to supplement your income, replace your income, or get debt free and save for something awesome.

Make Money On Xomba

If you’re trying to make money from home, you should look for as many passive income streams as possible. You should also look for some ways to socially promote your passive income efforts. I’ve recently learned about Xomba which seems to provide a great way to do both.

Make Money From Home Through Xomba

Xomba is a site I recently joined that has a few benefits. First, it shares Google Adsense with you 50/50. Second, it pays you an additional 10% of revenue through referrals. Third, it provides a great way to showcase other work of yours online. You can write Xombytes (articles) or Xomblurbs (social bookmarks) that can bring you traffic to your other revenue-generating sites. I’ve only been dabbling for a bit but am already getting some page impressions. Check out Xomba here. Don’t be afraid to sign up through a referral code as you won’t lose any of your earnings and after you’ve signed up, you can refer others and earn from their contributions.

The more passive income streams, the better and again, this site does two things for you because you can socially bookmark your online articles such as: your Bukisa articles, your eHow articles as well as promote your other online work as well.

Passive Income: The Key To The Perfect WAH Life

Working it home can sometimes be a job that requires double shifts. When you’re working for yourself, though, you’re typically not anxious to clock out for the day because you often LOVE what you do and find it exciting. The key to a great work at home life is balance between work time and personal time and a great way to have more time without sacrificing earnings is passive income.

Passive income means that you don’t have to work for every penny you get. You can set up a work at home business that makes you money while you sleep. That may sound like a sales pitch but it’s a reality for many smart business people. A bit of work is done now but instead of just being paid once, you get residuals. Here are some examples of online passive income opportunities:

Affiliate Marketing

Help other people sell products and they’ll pay you a commission. You don’t have to handle products or money, you just direct people to a place where the product owner does the selling. Here’s an example of a program that can teach you how to do affiliate marketing.

Write Articles for Revenue Sharing

A lot of big sites make money from advertising and they are hungry for fresh content so will share the revenue they earn with people that write those articles. Sites like eHow and Bukisa pay you and sites like Bukisa pay you when you sign other people up by sharing revenue from that writer with you as well.

Online Stores

When you set up an online store, you can do it so that you never have to handle a product. This is called drop shipping and there are dozens and dozens of wholesalers that will supply customers with products and pay you a commission because your ‘online store’ generated the sale. There are easy templates available to help you build a store and a professional looking one at that without you ever having to worry about lack of technical skills. You can set up an eBay store or a store on your own website easily.

Forex

The foreign exchange market now offers a lot of software programs that can run on autopilot for you so that you can make money on the exchange of foreign currency despite knowledge or services of a broker. Because currency fluctuations happen so regularly, there’s a great opportunity for people who know when to buy and when to sell. The dividends can really add up. It takes a lot of know-how to know just when to do that though so this hasn’t traditionally been a passive type of income program. But today, there are Forex robots available that run and manage your account for you so that you don’t have to set up brokers and pay brokerage fees. The software does all the trading and earns you money. There’s a lot of money to be made here but it requires an initial investment for the software and your trading account opening balance. Learn more about FAP robots here or watch the FAP video on the WAH Blog about page.

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to make income at home without sacrificing every waking moment. Only you can decide which opportunity is right for you but the most successful work at home professionals tend to have multiple streams of passive income.

3 Passive Income Writing Sites

If you like to write articles, you can make some decent income at it. My friend Maria makes about $1,500 a month on eHow. I’m not in the U.S. so can’t participate in eHow yet (I’m hopeful they’ll some day change that!) but I have other programs I do participate in such as:

-Bukisa

Bukisa wants your how to articles and videos and you’ll make $3.95 per 1000 page views. I started with this site in October and have already hit payout.

-Yuwie

I’m still learning about Yuwie but there’s lots to do in this social community so I’m checking it out. Not only do you get paid page views for things people do on your pages but for your own pages as well. The only downside I see so far is a LOT of ads to sift through and this comes up sometimes when I want to do something so having to bypass ads is slightly annoying.

-InfoBarrel

InfoBarrel is a lot like Bukisa or eHow but the site offers Adsense revenue sharing instead of per page view rates so this looks like it has the same type of potential as eHow which means you can make a lot of money. You can also see how much money you’ll make because you track it through your own Adsense account.

Making money through passive income streams works great because you can write something today that pays you indefinitely. In 2006 I wrote an article about a particular topic on a shared revenue site and it went viral and is still paying me about $30 a month via Google Adsense almost 3 years later!

Get Paid to Socialize with Yuwie

Yuwie is a site I joined a few months ago but have just started to dabble with it. It’s a site that pays you to socialize. It reminds me a bit of MySpace and it’s highly ad driven but I see some definite potential for self-promotion, networking and earnings. Check out Yuwie here.

It has blogs, games, clubs, chat and more and you get paid for page views by people that view your pages as well as your own usage on the site. Payments can be via PayPal with just a $5/minimum payout and you can make money by referring others.

How much money can you make?

Taken from Yuwie’s FAQ:

“We can’t say exactly, but here’s an example of what could happen. The chart below assumes you refer 3 people, and those 3 people refer 3, then those refer 3, through 10 levels, and each referral gets 1000 page views for the month, and the month’s RSR is $0.50.

Results are not guaranteed. This is just an example of what could happen”.

The more passive income streams, the better and this site also presents some great opportunities to promote your other websites (if you have any) through RSS feeds, profile links and the ability to post blogs that include links. How are you doing with Yuwie? Feel free to friend me if you do join.

Can You Make Money With Amazon MTurk?

Amazon Mturk (mechanical turk) offers the ability to make money online from home. You can make cash if you have a US bank account or transfer earnings into an Amazon gift certificate and if you’ve been to Amazon lately you’ll know you can buy just about anything on the site!

what is the Amazon Mturk program?

Human intelligence tasks, aka HITS are offered to people who are members of the program and you can make a penny to several dollars for tasks that include things like writing, answering questions, doing admin work and more.

Is the pay on Mturk good?

The pay is really low. There are article writing jobs that pay much lower than you’d earn on many content sites and there are other tasks that are priced quite low as well but the site might be worth joining if you’d like to earn a bit of money in your down time for filler pay when not much else is available. This can be a good start for those just dipping their toe into the waters of working at home because:

Positives of Amazon Mturk

-it costs $0 to join

-Amazon is a trusted company

Negatives of Amazon Mturk

The negative side of things beyond difficulty cashing out if you’re not American, is that buyers have to choose to accept your work or you don’t get paid so if you’ve accepted a $10 job to write 10 articles and the buyer doesn’t like your work, you’ve wasted your time.

Writing on spec is something experienced writers don’t typically do because without a ‘kill fee’ that you’re paid if the buyer doesn’t like your writing, you can definitely lose out. Not all the jobs are writing though as some are research related or administrative.

There are a lot of ways to make money online beyond this site. Dig through my posts and you’ll see many online job opportunities. But, Mturk could provide you with some easy opportunities and the penny and nickel gigs could add up in your spare time for some spare change. Realise that you are financially responsible to pay tax for what you earn and again, you could spend time working on a project you won’t be paid for. I’d love to hear from other MTURK hit providers to see what their experience has been.

Bukisa Experiment: 1 Month Update

If you’re looking for extra ways to make passive income, sites that offer revenue sharing for articles can be very lucrative. An article you write once in a span of fifteen payments could pay you dividends monthly for an indefinite period of time. Instead of selling an article once, you could earn a more money this way!

Last month I started submitting articles to Bukisa. Here is my one month Bukisa earning update.

Get Paid To Read E-Mails: A Moral Dilemma?

If you’re looking at ways to make some money online, you’re probably going to come across programs that offer you money to surf the web or read e-mails. Today’s post will explain how this works and will tell you why you might choose to avoid these types of jobs.

Why Would Someone Pay You To Surf?

When faced with an online business opportunity, the first question you should ask yourself is, “What’s in it for them?” Understanding the motive of a potential client or employer is important in helping you determine if the job opportunity is right for you. Many people who accept paid to read email type job offers don’t really know that the job typically entails stealing from advertisers. Let me explain.

Online Pay Per Click Advertising and Click Fraud

In most instances where someone is paying you to click a link or view a webpage, they’re taking advantage of pay per click advertising. For every dollar they earn, they might pay you a penny. In a program such as Google Adsense, advertisers pay a specific amount of money to have their ads displayed to potential clients. The advertiser pays Google a portion for each click and sometimes for a page impression as well. Google will pay some of that money to publishers of sites that show advertisements. When you join a PTR program and you are paid to view a webpage and / or to click on a link for something you’re really not interested in buying, you’re costing a company advertising money. Many of these advertisers aren’t just big companies with deep pockets. Some of those advertisers are entrepreneurs just like you who are trying to earn money online.

Very often, a paid to surf or paid to read e-mail job will pay you a penny or fraction of a penny for you to open an e-mail, click a link and view a website. Sometimes you’ll be encouraged to click an ad. Sometimes you’ll just need to view the page for 30 seconds. Many of them also take advantage of affiliate programs that pay for job leads. If a program pays $1 for every referral and you pretend to be a referral the program manager might share their commission with youAutosurfing is something you might consider running on your computer to earn a few extra dollars a day but in reality, it’s a lot like watching illegal cable. It might seem harmless but it truly is theft.

Also, a lot of the companies out there that run these programs don’t last very long. . By the nature of their unethical business they are not very trustworthy people and that should tell you something as well. Many of these sites won’t pay out to their members until a high dollar amount is hit. This demonstrates to many that they are hoping you’ll never hit payout and then they don’t need to pay you at all.

You’ll probably find some people saying they’re making money with this method and have never been ‘stiffed’ by someone running one of these programs. This may be true but after understanding how much of this money is derived, do you still feel good about this type of job?

The more scams and cheats out there, the more difficult it is to make money on the internet because companies that host revenue sharing opportunities are on the lookout for click fraud and will eventually disable accounts of people that are caught. Not only could you be stealing from advertisers but just before you hit that magical payout number, the program manager who’s supposed to pay you could have their accounts banned and forfeit their earnings.

There are a lot of honest ways to make an online income. This blog aims to present you with many of those options.

Tips To Make Extra Money For Christmas

f you’re just taking the plunge into working at home and are desperate for ways to make some quick money for the Christmas season, here are some helpful tips for you. This is by no means an exhaustive list of online money making options but for those looking to get started quickly to get some income flowing, these tips can help.

  1. Sell some items on eBay. There is a wealth of information on the eBay site that’ll enable you to get started.
  2. If you can write, start writing how-to articles for sites like Bukisa and eHow. These sites share revenue with you and some writers on ehow, for instance make over $900 a month in residuals. You may or may not hit payout in time for Christmas but if you start straight away you could at the very least have earned some funds before those first 2009 credit card bills come in.
  3. If you can write, you may visit an online webmaster forum and look in the classifieds section to find pay per post jobs as well as people looking for virtual assistants.
  4. Open your own online niche store. If you get started in November or early December you could cater to the hungry Christmas market.
  5. Join a job bidding site like Elance where you can make money selling your services which could include writing, translation, technical or virtual assistant services.
